چکیده

Alternating electrostatic multilayer adsorption of poly-L-lysine (pLys) and DNA is used to create well-defined biopolymer multilayers for use as an ultrathin aqueous phase in liquid–liquid interfacial measurements. The molecular structure and thickness of the polyelectrolyte multilayers are determined using a combination of polarization modulation FT-IR reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-FTIRRAS) and FT-surface plasmon resonance (FT-SPR) thickness measurements. Electroactive species such as ferri/ferrocyanide ions can be incorporated into the DNA/pLys polyelectrolyte multilayers. The ion transport activity of these electroactive films when in contact with 1,2dichoroethane is verified by electrochemical measurements. Micron-sized patterns of these multilayers are created by either photopatterning, vapourdeposited spot patterning or microfluidic stencil processing, and are used in conjunction with fluorescence and surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRI) to monitor (i) the intercalation of dye molecules into DNA/pLys ultrathin films, (ii) the electrostatic adsorption of gold nanoparticles onto DNA/pLys multilayers and (iii) the spatially controlled incorporation and reaction of enzymes into patterned biopolymer multilayers. Ultrathin Polypeptide Multilayer Films for the Fabrication of Model Liquid/Liquid Electrochemical Interfaces

Ultrathin (<20 nm) polypeptide multilayer films are assembled by the electrostatic adsorption of alternating monolayers of poly(L-lysine) and poly(L-glutamic acid) onto carboxylic acid terminated alkanethiol-modified gold surfaces. These polypeptide multilayer films are hydrophilic, can bind electroactive anions such as ferri/ ferrocyanide, and are stable when immersed in organic solvents such ...

Electrovariable gold nanoparticle films at liquid-liquid interfaces: from redox electrocatalysis to Marangoni-shutters.

Control over the physical properties of nanoparticle assemblies at a liquid-liquid interface is a key technological advancement to realize the dream of smart electrovariable nanosystems. Electrified interfaces, such as the interface between two immiscible electrolytes solutions (ITIES), are almost an ideal platform for realizing this dream. Here, we show that the Galvani potential difference ac...

Electrochemical characterization of the ultrathin polypeptide film/1,2-dichloroethane liquid liquid interface

A model liquid liquid interface formed by an ultrathin hydrophilic polypeptide film at a chemically modified gold surface in contact with a 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) electrolyte solution is characterized with a combination of electrochemical and in situ polarization modulation FTIR (PM-FTIR) measurements. The hydrophilic films are prepared by the sequential layer by layer electrostatic adsorptio...

Sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG) and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) are employed to study the interfacial structure and adsorbed amount of the amino acids L-lysine and L-proline and their corresponding homopeptides, poly-L-lysine and poly-L-proline, at two liquid-solid interfaces. SFG and QCM-D experiments of these molecules are carried ou...
